A police officer opens fire at police station injuring 3 colleagues

On Wednesday, a police officer assigned to the Loruk police station in Baringo County was detained for indiscriminately shooting at the outpost, injuring a colleague and two civilians in the process.

According to a police complaint filed under OB 10/25/10/2023, the incident started when the assailant, police constable Edward Otieno, came at the station to report for duty.

He began shooting at the station around 12:45 p.m., using his G3 rifle loaded with one magazine.

He shot Police Officer Wycliffe Otieno in the left upper arm, Zacharia Chelagat in the stomach, and Winnie Cherop in the behind during the encounter.

According to the report, the victims were injured, with bullets stuck in their bodies, and were taken to the hospital.

After wrecking havoc for a while, fellow cops at the station finally subdued and disarmed their colleague. The cop had wasted 15 rounds by the time he was neutralized, according to the statement.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the officer’s motivation.

This incident shows the difficulties that law enforcement officers encounter in high-stress, demanding workplaces, which can have a negative impact on their mental health.

According to the most recent National Police Service (NPS) data, an average of 12,000 police officers are struggling with mental health issues.

To address this issue, senior officers attend frequent training sessions targeted at assisting their subordinates in dealing with mental health issues.
