A trader describes how Kanjo stole Ksh 400k from her during a raid.

A Nairobi trader has said that she was robbed of Ksh400,000 at Mwariro Market along Ring Road by Nairobi County Council personnel, also referred to as Kanjo.

The woman, a bulk potato seller, claimed that when Kanjo broke into her store, she was counting her losses and had lost all of the money she had earned from sales.

In addition, she claims that during the event on Wednesday, October 18, the officers nearly grabbed her phone, got the Ksh400,000 cash out of her purse, and physically assaulted her.

The woman said that the traders ultimately took the brunt of the raid and that it was the result of a misunderstanding between the county officials and the market administration.

She also failed to say whether or not she had reported the incident to the police in an attempt to get her Ksh400,000 cash back.

However, the woman also said that, depending on the quantity of potatoes she brings from the farm to her store, she must pay a fee of Ksh 9,000–10,000 before she may enter the market.

Another vendor in the same market bemoaned the disruption of their operations by illegal raids by County Council police, which in turn created fear and anxiety among vendors.

In addition to the kanjos’ annoyance, vendors of perishable goods expressed dissatisfaction over excessive cess levied by the county administration.

They also pleaded for the county, under the leadership of Governor Johnson Sakaja, to step in and fix the crisis by cutting taxes and implementing improved management practices.
