Energy CS Chirchir admits meeting oil businesswoman who disappeared

After meeting in private with a businesswoman who was suspected of bringing a Ksh17 billion oil shipment into the nation from Turkey, Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has spoken out about the incident.

Chirchir revealed that the businesswoman, who vanished moments after giving a statement at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters, came to his office five days after the consignment was detained by the authorities at the Mombasa port. He made this admission to reporters on Monday after organizing a tree-planting exercise in Baringo County.

Chirchir claims that the woman insisted she was the legitimate owner and requested for his help in having the shipment released.

Nonetheless, the 100,000 metric tons of diesel were also claimed by Ramco and Galana Oil Kenya Limited.

The CS affirmed that he gave her instructions to report the incident to DCI headquarters so that they could look into it.

According to Chirchir, the paperwork they possessed showed that the Ksh17 billion that was imported belonged to Galana Oil Kenya Limited, one of the businesses that the government specifically chose to supply oil to other regional oil marketers as part of the government-to-government agreement.

Still, Chirchir sidestepped talking about the businesswoman’s disappearance.

The alleged Ksh17 billion oil consignment importation sparked curiosity across the country, with State Corporations wondering how the entrepreneur was able to afford to purchase diesel of that magnitude.

The businesswoman’s documents were verified by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), which insisted that all shipments follow the government-to-government agreement between Kenya and the Gulf Countries.

Cliff Ombeta, the businesswoman’s attorney, argued in the woman’s defense that she was in collaboration with those who were authorized to import oil.

The entrepreneur vanished on Sunday, and it’s still unclear where she is. DCI has not yet made a statement regarding her questioning or if it is looking into her disappearance.
