Meet Raila’s little sister Beryl Achieng you did not know about

Following in the footsteps of their father, Jaramogi, Azimio Chief Raila Odinga and his brother Oburu Oginga are among the most recognizable political personalities in the nation.

Ruth Odinga, Raila’s older sister, has also not been left behind. Ruth held a number of political posts, most notably that of Kisumu Deputy Governor from 2017 to 2022, when she was re-elected to her present role as Kisumu Woman Representative.

However, the former prime minister also has a lesser-known sister named Beryl Achieng. She has often maintained a low profile and reportedly despises the spotlight.

In the Odinga family, Beryl is the youngest.

Beryl Achieng is a trained teacher who also practices law. She is the daughter of Jaramogi’s first wife, Mary Auma.

Beryl gave a speech on October 16 during her brother Oburu Oginga’s birthday celebration in Siaya. She explained her decision to become a lawyer.

Beryl claimed that while she was in school, she always thought mathematics was a difficult subject.

As a result, she naturally favored a job path that would not need a lot of math after she completed her schooling.

Achieng disclosed that she was classmates with Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka on Oburu’s birthday.

At the same gathering in Siaya, Kalonzo repeated the same remarks. Raila had just revealed her sister to the public at that very moment that she made the revelation.

Beryl disclosed to the assembly that she is the only sibling of the Odinga family to have gone to school in Kenya.

Beryl claims that the reason she is not quite as popular as her siblings is that she is not as involved in politics.

Beryl has worked as a teacher as well as in a number of top positions.

For example, Beryl was named the new Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) in 2020.

Beryl Achieng marriage

Beryl married real estate magnate Otieno Abala in 1974, who would go on to explore political politics. Regretfully, Abala passed away in the Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu in 1985 after suffering a heart attack.

Nevertheless, Beryl and Abala’s marriage was dogged by issues, from accusations of domestic abuse to Jaramogi’s condemnation of the couple.

In his 2013 book The Flame of Freedom, Raila described how his sister battled in the tumultuous seas of an abusive marriage to the legislator.

Given the Odinga family’s prominence in politics, Raila claimed in the book that he believed Abala utilized them as a springboard to launch his political career.
