Raila and Kalonzo Support Lenku in Push for Zoning of Maa Counties

Principals of Azimio la Umoja Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka have backed calls from Maa community leaders for natives to be given preference in politics.

Governor Joseph Ole Lenku is pushing to have some political seats in Kajiado, Samburu, and Narok counties “zoned off,” specifically for Maa community members. Raila and Kalonzo have already endorsed this idea.

Lenku’s recent calls for the immigrant communities living in the three counties to abstain from running for elected office caused quite a stir.

He declared that the Maa community would seek protection for marginalized populations from the political assault of immigrant communities by presenting a memorandum to the National Dialogue Committee, which is co-chaired by Kalonzo and Kimani Ichung’wah, the majority leader of the National Assembly.

Lenku went on to say that internal disputes between the immigrant and host communities were the result of the failure to protect the seats.

After consulting with the clergy in all three counties, he claimed, they had decided to support the memorandum.

In relation to seeking political office, Raila urged the host communities’ respect.

In Laikipia and Isiolo, where immigrant communities have assumed some leadership roles, there are ongoing clashes between the Samburu and Maasai, which appears to be the source of the requests for the safeguarding of the seats.
